Schools Beyond Screens - Shawnee Mission

We are a coalition of parents and educators advocating for school policies grounded in independent research, public accountability and developmentally-appropriate practice.

About Us

We are a group of parents, educators, and community members in the Shawnee Mission School District advocating for responsible, data-driven and independent research informed use of school-issued devices.  With the support of the community, we are reaching out to the Shawnee Mission School District Board of Education with the goal to support responsible use of EdTech for our students. With your help, we will continue to define our asks.  Please complete the survey to share your thoughts, support our efforts, stay up-to-date on progress, and get involved!

Our current asks based on the survey:

Eliminate 1:1 devices in grades PreK through 2nd grade and review the independent research supporting this recommendation.

Establish required digital citizenship instruction for all students, including online safety, media literacy, information verification, and keyboarding skills.

Block student access to YouTube, as well as all gaming, video-streaming and social media on student devices.

Create a dedicated Educational Technology Oversight Committee and a separate AI Oversight Committee led by community stakeholders to evaluate classroom technology, review research, monitor safety, and make recommendations for implementation.

Pause the implementation of student facing generative AI in district curriculum until its safety, effectiveness, and educational necessity can be fully proven.

*Students with IEPs and 504 plans may be exempt from these requested changes based on their needs.
