Action

Below are resources to help you take action right now as a parent or guardian.

Sign up to stay in the loop about the specific asks we have made of the district across these core issue areas, as well as opportunities to take action and support our advocacy efforts.

Advertisements

Actions for Parents and Guardians:

Have conversations with our children’s teachers sharing with them our concern about advertisements playing during the day.

Share this one pager with teachers (K-2) that gives teachers direct information on workaround tools to dismiss advertisements when showing YouTube videos to students.

Communication

Actions for Parents and Guardians:

You are able to access many (not those outside of Clever) of the technology application your child uses during the day on Clever.com.

Ask your child's teacher for a QR code to Clever to be able to see the applications your child is working on during the day.

You can ask yourself these questions when looking at the applications:

Are these apps at the right level of complexity and challenge for my child?

How do these apps strike the right balance between learning and gaming?

Socialization

Actions for Parents and Guardians:

Have conversations with your child's teachers asking if videos are shown during snack time, if I-Pad is offered during indoor recess, choice time, or other key socialization moments. If so, start the conversation about requesting your child to have alternatives to screen time during these moments and offer ideas of other activities the whole class can do. If you are able, offer to provide teachers with screen-free learning resources, such as games, drawing materials, and other hands-on activities.

Screen Time

Actions for Parents and Guardians:

Have conversations with your child's teachers about screen time in the classroom and provide teachers with ideas and resources in offering alternative learning modes.

YouTube

Actions for Parents and Guardians:

Ask your child (third grade and above) about YouTube and learn from them about the impact of YouTube use during the school day.

Share your stories with our chapter.

Generative A.I

Actions for Parents and Guardians:

Share resources on the negative impact of generative AI on children with other parents and teachers.

Share about the recent bans across the country: A.I is to Be Banned in N.Y.C Elementary and Middle Schools and LAUSD Student AI Ban.
