Proposals for technology use in DCPS

We are in the process of receiving ongoing input for our proposals to inform the development of a clear, consistent DCPS technology policy. (See the first version) These ideas evolved based on a review of best available evidence, input from teachers working in Wards 3, 4, 6 and 7, DC community organizations, parent feedback across the district, and other districts around the country, including in Maryland and Virginia.

Major areas of agreement include the need for:

More transparency on which technology products are deployed and why, associated budget per contract, and public links to these products and their privacy practices

An audit of educational technology vendors under contract with DCPS that evaluates efficacy, quality, legality, and user experience, and reallocation of any funds considered wasteful toward more fundamental classroom support, including printed materials

Ensuring access to technology for any student who needs it, including assistive technology for students with special learning needs

Digital literacy education for students to develop important skills for college and future careers

Protecting children’s privacy and data security, incorporating data minimization and other best practices

Safe, age-appropriate internet access and content filtration
