Schools Beyond Screens Calls for Suspension of LAUSD Superintendent and Emergency Audit of Tech Contracts
Schools Beyond Screens is calling for the immediate suspension of Superintendent Alberto M. Carvalho, pending results from the FBI’s current investigation.
Schools Beyond Screens has repeatedly pushed Mr. Carvalho and the LAUSD Board of Education for increased transparency with regard to the ballooning tech contracts that are cannibalizing our schools’ budgets. Given that the focus of the ongoing FBI investigation appears to relate to these and other contracts, we call for the temporary removal of Mr. Carvalho as well as a comprehensive audit of all tech contracts procured during his term, to determine whether they are safe, legal, appropriate, and effective. Our concerns include, but are not limited to: the purported misappropriation of Prop 28 funds, the collapse of the “Ed” chatbot, the procurement process for iReady and other apps, and any potential conflicts or improprieties that may have arisen from Mr. Carvalho’s position on the Board of code.org and other dealings.
Furthermore, we insist that LAUSD freeze all planned layoffs until we have a clearer understanding of where taxpayer dollars are being spent. We stand with Education Workers United, UTLA, and Parents Supporting Teachers in demanding accountability from the district.
Mr. Carvalho’s leadership–in both Los Angeles and Miami–has been marked by a systemic lack of transparency and potential impropriety. While we applaud his work protecting LAUSD’s immigrant families, we have long had concerns about his possibly conflicted relationships in the tech industry, the effects of which are directly experienced by our students. The district must continue to protect its families’ safety from ICE, while also upholding its obligation to provide a high-quality education by suspending Mr. Carvalho and minimizing the distraction of this investigation.
