About Us & Core Principles
Schools Beyond Screens is a national movement advocating for technology use that is student-centered and evidence-based. At Schools Beyond Screens - Alexandria (ACPS), we advocate for policies grounded in independent research, public accountability and developmentally appropriate practices.
We believe technology should support learning, not replace it. For example:
Typing tools may be used for final drafts, but ideas should be planned and outlined on paper.
Videos may be used to enrich, never to replace live teaching or discussions.
Digital research tools may be used only on school-run devices under teacher guidance, provided time is devoted to critical evaluation of digital output.
Given overwhelming evidence of negative outcomes, we believe some technologies should be restricted in schools:
Smartphones should not be permitted during the school day. (ACPS has already adopted this)
Gamified learning apps should not be used in core academic subjects.
No student should be required to use digital platforms when proven offline alternatives exist.
We expect schools to partner with families and ask for the following:
Homework must be printable and accessible offline.
Screen use during school hours should be limited according to a student’s age and grade-level.
Families retain the right to opt-out of device programs without penalty to their child’s education.
Teachers should have the autonomy to teach without being forced to rely on digital platforms.
Schools should work in partnership with parents and the wider community to prioritize health, well-being and deep learning.
