Our Asks
What are we working to achieve?
Building on the momentum and success of the bell-to-bell cellphone ban that has already been enacted in Frederick County, it’s time for the district to embrace intentional, kid-centered, evidence-based policies around classroom tech.
Full ban on generative AI use for students. AI in education is an experiment and our kids should not be test subjects.
✔️ ACHIEVED! As of October 7, 2026, Frederick County adopted AI Policy 124 which bans AI use in grades PreK-12.
A comprehensive technology audit conducted by FCPS to determine how long students are on screens, what they are accessing and for what purpose, as well as the number and costs of technology contracts.
No internet connected one-to-one devices, moving to a cart or lab model for all students so Chromebooks are accessible for learning, but not a constant distraction.
No student-facing screen use for K-5.
Clear guidance to schools on appropriate amount and types of screen use from smart boards as well as student-facing devices such as Chromebooks.
A clear policy statement from the Frederick County Board of Education that reflects the empirical evidence that excessive screen use harms children and undermines learning in multiple ways. Technology should be safe and used only when backed by evidence.
Prioritization of paper-based learning in the operating budget, including procurement and development of curricula for all grades.
Defaulting to analog learning at school and for homework except for specialized technology courses and special education needs.
Critical instruction on AI, the internet, and other technology based tools.
