SBS Opposes LAUSD’s Planned Layoffs

SBS stands firmly opposed to any layoffs until the district conducts a full audit of all existing tech contracts.

We know that American schools spent $30 billion on edtech last year. How much of that came from LAUSD, the second largest district in the country? How many jobs could be saved by canceling expensive tech contracts that are not producing results?

According to the LA Times, “more than half” of the district’s 220 IT technicians face layoffs. This, when the district is already failing to protect children from harmful content online.

Just last week, SBS member and LAUSD parent Andi Self spoke in front of the Board about middle school students accessing the Epstein files in school.

How can LAUSD defend reduced monitoring for all the internet-connected devices in our classrooms?

Three Board members–Karla Griego, Rocío Rivas, and Kelly Gonez–opposed the cuts, noting that there has been insufficient analysis of potential alternatives, like reducing outside contracts.

We demand transparency from Superintendent Carvalho, and we stand with LAUSD’s teachers, staff, and students. They deserve better.
